Unit 8: Understanding radio

Unit 2: Pre-production Techniques

Understanding the requirements for production

Definition:
Resources are a stock or supply of money, materials, staff and other assets that can be drawn on by a person or organisation in order to function effectively.

Used for:
I needed to use resources in all of my radio units as they allowed me to achieve professional standard projects. For my production Units research allowed me to create and produce the tasks to a high standard and abled me to function the projects effectively. Resources allow the media industry to develop and without certain resources we would have no media entity. I needed resources to achieve near-professional standard work.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Definition:
Codes of practice and regulations are a series of codes, developed in partnership that should be adhered to when undertaking work.

Used for:
Codes and conventions were used in my work to ensure a full understanding of the regulations of my productions and to understand the limits we can reach in the productions. In unit 44 the codes have been used to help me produce work which does not break any of the OFCOM rules. I specifically had to make a radio advertisement which broke the codes and conventions of OFCOM, it gave me an insight into why we should not break the codes, and what was acceptable in a production. These types of codes are brought into society as to not offend any member of the public, they allow a sense of secure viewing and therefore are highly needed.

Definiton:
Equipment is the necessary items for a particular purpose

Used for:
Equipment was always needed throughout my units. It allowed me to be resourceful and produce quality peices of work which were successful. With the high standard pieces of equipment i have been able to create some professional standard peices of work. Equipment, much like resources allows a production to run, without equipment we would not have a production, and therefore would not have anything to work with, i.e voice footage, editing resources, client briefing etc.

Type of research and unit:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Definiton:
Personnel are the people employed in an organization or engaged in an organized.

Used for:

In all Units i have completed, I used personnel in order to create a high standard production, choosing the people i felt comfortable working with allowed our team to become one which was a success in producing and completed professional standard work. Each individual person working in the team had specific talents which layed in different areas of the media. All together we were able to move confidently in out production.

Definiton:
Materials are the things needed for an activity.

Used for:
Materials i used included scripting, interview questions, and questionnaires  to allow me to gather the correct research for each product. This also allowed me to find out relavent information of the consumers demands from my production. Materiel such as the client briefs and contracts allowed a smooth production and enabled me to secure a near professional production.

Definition:
The budget is the amount of money needed or available for a purpose.

Used for:
There were budgets made for some productions which were generallly presented throughout the client briefing. This allowed for an understanding into the way transactions are made between client and advertiser and gave me insight into the ways a production is run, trough financing.

Definition:
Documentation is material that provides official information or evidence or that serves as a record

Used for:
The area in which we used the most documentation were in the initial planning of each production. We would create proposals and treatments along with scripting to allow the production to run smoothly.  They were extremely useful to my work as they allowed me to follow a well-structured schedule and meet deadlines created.

Definition:
Health and saftey are the steps taken to ensure the safety of the personnel involved in the activity

Used for:
During each of the productions i had to make sure a correct health and saftey chart was created, allowing for the right proceeders to be taken in any emergency. A health and safety check is needed to ensure legal terms are covered during a making of a production.

Unit 41: radio dramas

Radio Drama

old radio Pictures, Images and Photos

Introductory tasks (P1, M1, D1)

Radio drama relys on only music, voices and sound effects to allow the reader to visualize the drama being told. Radio Drama was the first type of drama in media other than acting. It allowed people to listen to their favourite tales at home and helped capture many people into the popularity of radio. This concept of radio hit its popularity peak in the mid 1920's and by the 1940's everyone was listening worldwide (this would mean that radio drama is over 70 years old, still continuing to run today.
In 1927 networks began adapting short stories and creating original stories to broadcast on the radio. This made the writers begin to write storys that continued on another day. Soon there was programs about certain topics with guest hosts and interviews. A lot of one hour network programs began to develop which became more popular by the minute. Musical programs such as concert music, new music, classical... etc became extremely popular during this period of the late 1920's. A variety of programs would play at alternate weeks such as a talk/debate program one week, musical programs the next, then a radio drama after that.
In the 1930's there was recognized potential in the advetising world for radio, advertisers became willing to buy sponsering programs and air-time which brought a whole new view on the radio. Networks now competed for the advertisers and the race was on to improve the world of radio as they knew it. New programs were developed which involved a variety of music, radio drama, comedy shows, contests...etc each with advertisements running through their broadcasting. News programs also became popular especially leading into the war times as everyone wanted to hear what was going on. The news programs allowed audiences to hear about the devistation of the war, there was also patriotic music played on the shows.

Radio was hugely effected by the war for the simple reason that everybody wanted to know the news. People would tune in everyday to hear any changes or destruction of the war. The programs would have changed due to people demanding news or music to help them find peace at such a horrific time, the music would have become more war orientated and the news would be on non stop in households.
The invention of television brought fear to the radioAs television became popular, radio dramas gathered less viewers. Radio itself became less demanding as people could see the news instead of hearing it. Everyone became obsessed with the new technology of television that radio seemed 'old' 'out of age' and just plain boring. networks did not produce as many radio dramas and they continually decreased. This brought on bad news for radio however it still runs today as a very successful type of media.

In the 21st century radio dramas are less common however on channels such as radio 4 they are still played, the archers and sherlock holmes are just two examples. Nowadays, networks generally fall into the catogry of music programs, early morning programs and comedy hours. Radio aire and radio 1 are just two of these followers with the chris moyals show and many others.Using these points help conclude that even though they is listened to, i believe radio dramas wil slowley decrease untill one day they become extinct.

Orson Welles: War Of The Worlds...

In America radio was beyond question the king of the airwaves. Three out of four families already owned a set and eight million alone were sold in 1936. What people did not know was that this magnificant machine was about to terrify the nation. The distruption came on the Halloween night of October 1938 when Orson Welles tapped into the subconscious fears of a nation and convinced thousands of people that Martians were invading the United States. The cause of this madness was a dramatic appearence of The War Of The Worlds, an ifluential novel written 40 years before by H. G. Wells. The big radio networks were only a decade old and engaged in a frenzy of experimentation, Broadcasting vast amounts of original material such as comedies, dramas, soaps and a fresh brand of journalism that opened the US public to a new awareness of world conflict and politics. War Of The Worlds (WOW) was a radio drama played from the 20th floor at 485 Madison Avenue, New York in 1938. It was a fictional story about an alien invasion attacking the country, however this 'story' soon got out of hand. The show involved dance music which was interrupted on various occasions by realistic news flashes telling the nation of an alien attack. Many people did not hear the beginning of the show which informed them that it was a play, this made it more believable to think there was an actual marian invasion. The absence of different medias also made this more believable due to the radio being peoples only source of news and information. Another major reason which made it seem more believable was the fact that there was growing tension in the atmosphere from the fact that world war two was nearing. This on its own made people fear. Everyone got so scared that they fled their homes, some even placing towels over there heads because of the poisonous clouds in the sky. The play got so out of hand people were terrified. Even with the use of songs and music beds people believed this horrific ivasion was real.

Task 1:Using some of the websites listed below, choose 3 radio dramas of different genres and write an analysis of each. Use the pictures in the corners above to help you structure your writing.(P1, M1, D1)

The Archers:
The archers, in my opinion, is generally targeted at the older generation and posibly people who live in the country. this would be because they can identify with the characters and rural setting.
The archers begins with upbeat music played by an orchestra, it signifies a classical scene and connotes a rural setting. The music also (being upbeat) sets out a positive mood and a jolly atmosphere. we then move straight into the program, here we are introduced to characters, we mainly tell them apart due to there distinctive accents (some being from the country others from towns capturing there accents well). the characters are also portrayed through the use of names, one character would introduce another by mentioning there name and vise versa. this is effective as it allows us to identify the characters clearly as they enter the room.
we see that as the program continues background noises develop, they begin with people talking then develope into moving objects such as plates and crowd noise. this is effective as it sets the scene and allows us to know where they are at this point. silence is used to separate scenes for example one scene they would be in the hall then silence then they would be outside. it was also used for a second as the cake fell to the ground.
overall, we see that the use of these effects havemassive input into the program and will be something to look to do in our show.
The man in thed wooden hat:
the man in the wooden hat is set in london and hong kong in the 1950's it begins with a mid-pitched, standard english narrative voice that draws us in straight away. This is accompanied with a soft music bed played with string instruments (possibly a violin.
we are introduced to our first background noise straight away, it is the noise of some playing cards shuffling, which suggests the man is playing with them.
As we go through the show we are introduced to many voices, one being a chinese man, another being a posh british voice and others being british women and the narrator. i feel this allows a wider target audience as more people can identify with the characters, however i still believe it is mainly targeted at mid aged to older people this is because of the tone of voice and the fact it is set in 1950's.
there is some backgorund music introducing characters for example, soft piano music is played then a british woman begins to speak. tere is also voices of children in the background showing that we could be near a social area. Also there is soft music under the speach along with sound effects to get a full understanding of the location and storyline.
the narrator is used alot throughout this show, this is so that all the information is given to the listener and allows them to clearly understand something if they didnt the first time.
A man lay dead:

A man lay dead is a murder mystery, tking the listener through a journy of enigmas untill we finally find out the murderer.
I would say it is set in the war time period if not earlier, this ia because of the jolly piano music which is usually shown in old movies. the voices also help portray this, they are all clear mid to high pitched and in standard english to suggest there welth.
We begin with a mid aged man adressing a groupof people. We see this from the voices in the background and the sound of movement. His voice is very posh, early 20th century english and clear. He seems to be explaining the story like the narrator would.A gong sounds suggesting a religious place, however we know it is set in england. Then the piano music continues.
As the play continues we start to pick up a lot of posh wealthy speaking people.Silence is used alot in the programe to emphasise the enigmatic scenes. one example would be when a woman shreiks at the sight of the dead body then silence. As the silence breaks up we are introduced to new charactes, this could be useful to us as we could use this idea in our radio drama.Accents are also used in this which help separate the characters, we see there is many british people with posh accents however there is also a french man and a broad cornwall?accent. I believe accents are one of the most important things in a radio drama as they allow us to identify with certain characteds and also it makes them individual and specific to the story.

Task 2.Produce 3 x 20 second clips, each clip should emulate the codes and conventions of a specific genre. (P1, M1, D1)

Task 3: Produce a mind-map of your ideas for each text. Use the language that you have become familiar with from the first two tasks and create the min-map in the software of your choice. Use the example below to help you structure your diagram. (P2, M2, D2)

Task 4: Write 2 proposals for each drama (4) briefly stating the different possible ways in which you could produce your dramas. Include ideas on narrative, sound fx, locations, characters and music beds. (P2, M2, D2)

my proposal-fairytale
I propose to make a radio drama based on the well know fairy-tale, cinderella. It will have a primary target audience of teenagers 16+, and a secondary target audience of adults 20-30. being set in leeds, the main setting will be at a council estate. cinderella will be a stereotypical 'geek', she loves school and homework and will do anything for anyone. this leading to her two step sisters ruling her life. Their is a handsome boy called darren living next door however, because of Cinderella's social status darren does not know her, but her two older sisters do. Darren has organized a party and has invited the whole block of flats to come. cinderella is excited but then is told that she cannot go, her magical grandma called sue helps her and she is able to go to the party. she dances with darren and they fall in love, she has to leave but trips down the stairs and her trainer falls off, darren finds it and begins to search the block of flats to find her.
My second propasal would follow the typical narrative of a the fairytale. It would be aimed at 0-7 year olds who would need clear and simple phrases, therefore i would create a minimal worded script adding lots of music and 'fun' sound effects. It would last for 5-10 minutes and would contain a simple plot which is easily followed. the anthropomorphic characters would allow us to use some typical stereotypes and add in a wide range of characters. however, it would be hard to show this idea through the radio. we could use names and voices or even a narrator to solve this problem.

proposal-tyran virus

For my radio drama i propose a 5-7 minute program that ivolves a mid-point narrative. we are in the middle of an outbreak of an infectious virus, tyran. This virus will either kill people or turn them into terrifying flesh eating zombies. I will find some zombie noises and screams to show its ominous meaning. It will be set in a city called hawkesworth and follows the journey of 5 survivers travelling to safety. Throughout the program there will be a constant sound as to add suspense and fear. The characters names will be; zoe, bill, aaron, lewis and lee. they will all notice danger as the character lee enters and will begin to move into bills peril, Which they do not yet know. The program will finish on an enigma when the group hear there radio and are entered into safety.

My second proposal would be a 3-5 minute program, It would include a simple narrative as it is aimed at child-teen ages. The plot will include limited violence in order not to offend. There will be four characters who are all involved in defeating a ferocious beast. I would begin with the narrator introducing the scene and characters. Sound fx could be used to ensure full understanding of the setting such as, wind, rain and/or the sound of animals. I will use numerous sound fx throughout to extend the meanings, characters and setting. The group will follow on in the journey to beat the beast and it will contain a happy ending.

Task 5: Write a treatment for each drama (2) and again return to the language that we have covered tasks 1 and 2. Click on the example below will give you an idea of how your treatments should read. (P2, M2, M3)
Treatment- Fairytale
For my overall idea, i would follow my first proposal. The beginning of the show would contain modern 'hip-hop' style music introducing the main narrator who would introduce the play in a formal masculine voice. keeping a stereotypical fairytale plot, i would use the language and setting to add our own twist and help it fit in to the overall target audience of teenagers.Being set in leeds i will have the setting in a noisy council estste. i will use sound effects to create the noise of ongoing cars and traffic noise, i would also add in voices to the background. The speakers would have to put on a broad yorkshire accent and would have to use there voices to present the characters traits. The play is introduce by the narrator who will help portray settings and will fill in information that is not said by the characters. the basic plot of the story would be the same as in the origional cinderella. we will follow propps theory by giving cinderella the role of the damzel in distress, the sisters and step mum the role of the villain, the fairygodmother the role of the helper and finally the 'prince' the role of the hero. The target audience being 16+years makes it easier for us to do as we are at that age now and would know what to do.

Treatment- Tyran Virus

Our radio drama will be set in the year of 2010 following a group of people trying to survive a horrific mutant virus. our primary audience will be for 14+ so will need to contain action and drama however we should not contain enough to offend, it should be fun and easy to follow. The drama begins in the middle of the narrative, the outbreak will have already begun and we will jump straight into action. Using the 28 weeks later soundtract means we can create the sense of mystery and action that the narrative will benefit from. We will also incorporate some sound effects such as gun shots and fire arms, even the groaning of the mutant zombies will be added to give full effect. We would introduce the characters through the use of their names being mentioned and will add in each different characteristic to fit their personality. Using a music bed allows us to create a sense of action and suspense. It allows us to incorporate a range of actions such as running or shooting. the character zoe has lead the group through a supermarket to gather resources this is where our story will kick in. The first noise will be a door slamming connoting an entrance into the room. the supplies will consist of food, batteries, torches and blankets, we could show this by adding sound effects such as rustling and crunching for the food. The group consists of five main characters; Zoë, a very independent woman who can shoot well and has practise with ammunition, bill, a vetrain of the first gulf war very intelligent however common speaking and lovable, lewis, a lowyer from the Caribbean who has lost everything(he is the joker of the pack and will make comments on everything, aaron, a teenage boy who was found alone in his house sitting next to his bed, and finally lee, a soldier who has abandoned his base after the invasion of zombies, he watched his friends all die and could do nothing to help them. we could add in ambience of rain and wind to connote a change of setting from outside to inside and could exaggerate the scenery. The first 2 minutes of the drama will be full of action, this means we will have to add in sound effects such as an explosion or moaning from the zombies. During the end we could add in the ambience of zombies as this would connote their arrival and a distruption to the drama. We would use a music bed to create a sense of action it will contain a range of sfx which will add suspense, such as gunshots crashes and rain. I think that by doing this it would impact on the reader and would ensure that they know what is fully happening. By the end of the program the group will be lured into safety and even with an enigmatic ending the audience will be left with a kind of resolution.

Task 6:You should produce 2 scripts, one for each of the treatments from the previous task. Use the links below to check out some professional examples followed by some examples produced by students on this course. (P3, M3, D3)

Task 10: Complete an evaluation of your product. Use the writing frame below and include some audio-visual feedback. (P4, D4, M4) (P1, M1, D1)

The purpose of our radio show was to add suspense, action, and romance all in one. We decided on a primary target of male teenagers. I feel that the purpose was achieved by using the sfx and voices to emphasize the characteristics and impact on the action scenes. however, i feel the voices needed to have move variety in them and a wider range of accents would show that the whole world was hit by the attacks. The sfx of gunshots were our main source of action. It allowed us to follow our brief and add to the purpose of the program. The target audience, i feel, was clearly reached and the suspense allowed a more mature age to appreciate the drama. using the target audience of male teenagers, we gathered a few people from our school to give us feedback.

We decided that it would be more logical to discuss the ideas with the audience after their view, we first asked for their feedback and then asked if they understood the plot clearly. The main feel from the audience was that the effects and ambience put under the voices worked well and fit the genre. Another point included, The portrayal of each characters from lee's thoughts. The audience thought this was well structured however, it needed more impact on the whole thing. The crashes of glass worked and the action was clearly identifiable with the voices. The overall reaction to our drama was good, the audience seemed to notice all the action and knew what was happening, on a negative side, the audience thought the acting from some characters needed more variety.

Our radio production did not represent any type of person, age, size or culture in any bad form what so ever. We did however plan on using a Jamaican accent for one of the characters and wanted to use typical stereotypes for characters from different regions. Our radio production could be viewed as biased to only one accent. The characters seemed to only talk from one region, yorkshire, this would be because we only used people with this accent who found it hard to change their voice. We tried a variety of voice types but they did not work well with the scripted words. Originally, we intended to incorporate a range of ethnic groups but went against the idea for the simple reason it was set in one town.  In the production we used more boys than girls, the reason for this was to suit the target audience of male teenagers. The music track we used, i feel, was very appropriate for the genre and purpose of the production. It added suspense and clearly helped us enter into the voices.
The language used was appropriate to the target audience as it was casual and informal, the teenagers were able to identify with the type of language used and the terminology presented.

The technical side of the radio allowed us to change the voice levels and sfx impact. The levels were the main technical issue we faced, all the levels needed to fit in with each other and work well with the action. When doing the levels we found that some of the voices were not heard over the sfx therefore we needed to raise the voices and lower the effects, on some of the parts however, we decided that it would work well if you could only just hear the voice thus crating a deeper impact on the action. Using an external voice recorder allowed us to re record some voices we felt did not present the script well. In doing this we found that a lot of the voices needed to be cut up and moved. We faced numerous problems with this due to the fact that it was clearly obvious that the voices had been cut. We first decided to put an ambience under the parts with no voice but this did not work. In the end we gathered some static noise from a recording and added it in, i found it worked better and used it throughout. No voices were cut off as we made sure that there was enough space between each line. The action was the main theme of the production witch overthrew some of the voice. We changed this so that there was added romance and suspense scenes which kept the audience interested.  The editing overall was well put together and fit in together clearly. We chose to put the same music at the beginning and end to signify change.

Some typical points of the genre 'thriller' would be the theme of fear and suspense, zombies, monsters, action, movement and even death. I feel that the use of action in our show and zombie characters would also be out into a professional product and through the use of clever acting it would seem more realistic. In a professional studio there would be a wider range of editing equipment and recording equipment which would give more advantages to their production. Some other advantages would include more sfx, better equipment, higher quality actors and better editing programs. In a way our production produced a hero, villain, helper and damsel in distress however it did not follow the typical characteristics. We had the 'zombies' which would be perceived as the villain, The hero which changes from lee to the mysterious voice coming from the radio, the helpers which would include all the characters in the production and finally the damsel in distress which would also be all the characters in the production but mainly bill. The multi-strand narrative allowed us to fit the themes of romance and fear in one. our production was highly enigmatic and left the audience wondering what happened next.

SELF EVALUATION...
By producing this radio drama i feel i have learn a lot of new skills, some include audio levels and sfx. I now know that voices are very important to the production and will consider adding a wider range of accents in my next task. I feel that my strengths lie in the editing side of the production and my weaknesses would be script writing. I took on the role of team leader and organized the group, i feel i was a very active member of the group and helped out a lot. I have listened to the ideas of others and have took on any feedback and perfected them. My future targets would be to use a wider range of accents and voice pitches and use ambience to ensure the suspense or thrill is produced.
